John Cadbury and the Origin of Cadbury Chocolate
In 1824, Quaker John Cadbury began the Cadbury Chocolate success story on Bull Street in Birmingham. In a small shop he offered, among other things, homemade chocolate and drinking chocolate as an alternative to alcohol. He was convinced that alcohol was bad for society. In 1831 he opened his first chocolate factory and produced Cadbury chocolate for the consumer market. Cadbury chocolate quickly became more popular and the product range increased. Gradually he produced more and more products like Cadbury Milk Chocolate, Dairy Milk, Bournville Cocoa, Bournville Chocolate, Milk Tray, Flake, Roses, Milk Tray Bar, Cadbury's Fudge, Picnic, Lucky Numbers, Skippy, Aztec Bar, Toffee Buttons, Eggs, Easter Eggs, Wunderbar, Creme Egg and many more. In 1969 Cadbury merged with Jacob Schweppe's beverage company and was known as Cadbury Schweppes. It was not until May 2008 that the production of drinks and sweets was split up again. Since then Cadbury sold the English chocolate and the Dr Pepper Snapple Group took over the Schweppes beverage brands. In September 2009, Kraft Foods acquired Cadbury and has been distributing the popular Cadbury chocolate ever since.
